In response to the positive impact, SRP is contributing $52,000 for a third year to help fund grants for projects across the Phoenix Metro and Verde Valley areas.

Homeowners are eligible to apply for grants of up to $5,000; businesses and organizations are eligible for up to $10,000. Priority projects for SRP funding include irrigation efficiency, lawn removal, and commercial water conservation upgrades; however, diverse water stewardship projects will also be considered as part of the broader program.

“We are very grateful to have this ongoing partnership with Salt River Project,” said David Gressly, Executive Director of Friends of the Verde River. “This funding has greatly increased the capacity of our community to complete water conservation projects.

Support for this initiative advances SRP’s goal to conserve 5 billion gallons of water by 2035 through collaborative programs and partnerships.

“Every drop conserved today helps strengthen Arizona’s water future,” said Elvy Barton, Senior Manager of Water and Forest Sustainability at SRP. “Through our partnership with Friends of the Verde River, we’re helping residents, businesses, and organizations turn practical water-saving ideas into action, benefitting both local communities and the long-term resilience of our rivers.”

More than 100 nonprofit organizations throughout the Valley will help customers apply for assistance and distribute funding to eligible households. “These funds are an essential relief to keep our families and neighbors safe through financial hardships and rising temperatures,” said Marissa Calderón, Associate Director of Family Empowerment, Youth, and Community Services at Chicanos Por La Causa. 

Customers will be asked to provide a current SRP bill or M-Power Customer Report, proof of identification and documentation verifying household income or financial hardship.

Customers who do not qualify for traditional low-income energy assistance might be eligible for Power AZ, a program provided by the State of Arizona. This program offers up to $640 in assistance to households with incomes up to 100% of the State Median Income, which is $8,998 per month for a household of four. Additionally, customers can contact SRP to find out if they qualify for the SRP Income Qualified Discount™.  Those with incomes between 0% and 150% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) may qualify for a monthly bill credit of $35. Customers with incomes between 151% and 200% of the FPL can receive a monthly bill credit of $10.

SRP and Reclamation perform these inspections and maintenance projects every 20 years to ensure dam safety and water reliability for 2.5 million Valley residents. Throughout the project no water will be wasted. Water drawn from Canyon Lake will be used to satisfy normal deliveries to SRP water customers. In addition, water will continue to be stored in other reservoirs with no interruption in water delivery.

While maintenance is regularly performed on the dams, some critical equipment is located underwater, which makes it inaccessible without lowering the lake level. The work will focus on the normally submerged portions of Mormon Flat and Horse Mesa dams, as well as the river channel downstream of Horse Mesa Dam.

The drawdown project has several important benefits, including:

• Supporting operational safety of the dams for water storage and flood control.
• Ensuring water reliability for more than 2.5 million Valley residents.
• Providing an opportunity for SRP and other agencies and businesses to perform any necessary maintenance work and repairs to their Canyon Lake facilities.

It will take approximately four weeks to lower the water level by 54 feet; approximately eight weeks to complete the inspection and maintenance work; and approximately four weeks to fill the lake back to the normal level using water from upstream reservoirs.

Canyon Lake has over 57,000 acre-feet of water storage capacity – enough to provide water for about 173,000 Arizona families for a year. SRP began building dams, creating reservoirs and managing the surface water infrastructure more than 120 years ago. SRP is committed to maintaining adequate water supplies for long-term future use.

The new system will enable SRP to move water from south of the Salt River to the Arizona Canal, strengthening its ability to deliver water where it is needed most and helping ensure a resilient water supply.

“The Gilbert Road Pipeline project builds upon SRP’s legacy of innovative water management and engineering excellence,” said SRP President Chris Dobson. “More than a decade in the making and completed after five years of construction, this transformative project reflects the long-term vision, strategic investment and collaboration required to meet central Arizona's future water needs.”

The project involved the unique engineering challenge of installing 3.5 miles of 36-inch pipeline to transport approximately 20,000 gallons of water a minute uphill from SRP wells and an underground storage facility to the Arizona Canal. The pipeline crosses the Salt River channel and is suspended beneath Maricopa County Department of Transportation’s newly constructed Gilbert Road Bridge.

“Like the Gilbert Road Bridge, which opened to traffic in early 2025, the Gilbert Road Pipeline Project is a shining example of local agencies working together. MCDOT is proud to have been a partner in the successful completion of this critical infrastructure to benefit the residents of Maricopa County and the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community,” said Jesse Gutierrez, MCDOT Director and County Engineer.

Another section of the pipeline was installed using trenchless bore technology beneath the Beeline Highway before the system reaches its final delivery point. Five new high-capacity water production wells will be installed near the Granite Reef Underground Storage Project (GRUSP), one of the largest water-banking facilities in Arizona. SRP operates GRUSP in partnership with the cities of Scottsdale, Mesa, Phoenix, Gilbert, Chandler, and Tempe. GRUSP allows water to be stored underground and recovered when it is needed most, providing an important drought-resiliency benefit.

Together, the wells and pipeline will provide SRP with additional flexibility to manage water supplies and respond to changing water demands across the region.

Projects like the Gilbert Road Pipeline demonstrate what is possible when strong partnerships are built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to planning for future generations. The project was made possible through strong partnerships with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Maricopa County Department of Transportation. Their collaboration, leadership and shared commitment to regional water resilience played a vital role in bringing this complex infrastructure project to completion.

This surpasses the previous record peak of 8,542 MW set on August 7, 2025.  

The company also exceeded the 2025 record multiple times on Thursday, July 23 and Saturday, July 25.  

One megawatt is enough energy to power approximately 225 homes. 

The multi-day increase in energy demand is attributed to several factors, including extreme temperatures and continued customer growth. The high temperature recorded on July 24 was 117 degrees and the overnight low reached 97 degrees. 

“Teams across SRP conduct extensive planning and work year-round to ensure we provide reliable service, especially during long stretches of extreme daytime and nighttime heat,” said Pam Syrjala, SRP Senior Director of Supply and Trading. “We call on a diverse mix of generating resources, including natural gas, solar and battery energy storage, to serve customers around the clock.” 

Since last summer, SRP has brought several new energy resources online, including Copper Crossing PV Solar Project, Flatland Energy Storage, Pediment Battery Energy Storage System and the Coolidge Expansion Project. Together, these resources added nearly 800 MW to the grid.

As the flagship facility of the National Museum of Forest Service History, the new Legacy Center features interactive, immersive exhibits that tell the story of conservation in the United States and the public lands that helped define the nation.

SRP’s exhibit at the Legacy Center will help visitors understand watersheds, why they are important to water supplies, communities and wildlife habitats and how forest restoration improves watershed health.

The exhibit also highlights SRP’s partnership with the U.S. Forest Service on restoration efforts, including thinning overgrown forests to reduce wildfire risk, protect communities and improve the resilience of water resources.

“We are honored to be part of this amazing facility that will educate visitors about the importance of conserving and maintaining our national forests,” said Leslie Meyers, SRP Associate General Manager and Chief Water Resources Executive. “SRP is committed to protecting the health of the 8.3 million acres of largely forested lands in northern and eastern Arizona that serve as critical watersheds for the Phoenix metro area.”

The water delivered to communities throughout central Arizona begins as rainfall and snowmelt in the Salt and Verde River and East Clear Creek watersheds. Protecting these forested watersheds through restoration efforts is critical to reducing wildfire risk and ensuring a resilient water supply.

SRP has committed to helping increase the pace and scale of forest restoration through partnerships, education and support for the forest products industry, with a goal of thinning 800,000 acres by 2035. SRP and its partners are on track to help secure more than $50 million to support on-the-ground forest restoration projects on more than 71,000 acres across the state by mid-2027.

In addition to its exhibits, the Legacy Center houses more than 55,000 Forest Service artifacts on a 31-acre campus and includes outdoor exhibits, interpretive trails and historic structures.

Salt River Project (SRP) will host an additional in-person open house and virtual meeting to share information, seek public input and answer questions about the planned Marigold Energy Center in Stanfield, Arizona.

SRP will receive 400 MW of energy beginning this fall and will increase its allocation to 600 MW by summer of 2027.

SunZia is set to deliver enough energy to power approximately one million American homes annually, representing an $11 billion energy investment across the Southwest. • State of Arizona Power AZ Program – SRP customers with an income of up to 100% of the State Median Income, which is $8,998 per month for a household of four, may be eligible for bill assistance if they do not qualify for traditional low-income energy aid. Eligible customers can receive between $160 and $640 in assistance over a 12-month period. Additionally, a one-time crisis payment of up to $500 is available. To apply, customers can visit the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) A to Z portal.
   
• SRP Income-Qualified Discount – Income eligible customers can receive a $35 monthly discount or a $10 discount on their SRP electric bill. Customers between 0%-150% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) can receive a $35 a month bill credit. Customers at 151%-200% of the FPL can receive a $10 a month bill credit.
   
• Project SHARE – SRP partners with its customers and the Salvation Army to provide Project SHARE, an energy assistance program to help customers having trouble paying their energy bill.  The program offers a one-time grant per year to SRP customers who cannot pay their electric bills due to a crisis, such as job loss, medical emergencies or unexpected expenses.
   
• Energy Assistance by City – SRP customers can visit srp.net/assistance to access a list of resources and assistance programs available by city.  
   
• SRP eNotes – Customers can sign up for text and email notifications that provide outage notifications and weekly or monthly bill projections, payment reminders and high energy use alerts that can help better manage energy costs.   
   
• SRP Safety Net – Customers can choose someone to notify if their electric bill ever becomes past due to help protect them from service disruption.  
   
• SRP M-Power – The SRP M-Power price plan offers simple flat-rate pricing that customers pay upfront. The average SRP M-Power customer saves 12% on energy costs compared to customers who receive monthly bills on other SRP plans. 
   
• SRP Resource Counselors – Customers facing financial challenges beyond utility bill assistance can reach out to SRP’s Resource Counselors, a specialized team that will connect customers with community resources for housing, food, heat relief, AC repair and other assistance. Resource Counselors are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
   
• Healthy Homes Air Conditioning Program – SRP is partnering with AllThrive365 Healthy Homes Emergency HVAC Program to offer income-qualified customers support in repairing or replacing an AC unit. Fuel moisture is one of the most important indicators of wildfire danger, but today it is typically measured through manual field sampling, which is infrequent and labor-intensive. This pilot project, funded by SRP’s Innovation and Development Program, is testing new technology from Growvera that enables continuous, real-time tracking of forest fuel and soil moisture conditions.

About 200 sensors will be installed on six sites around the Tonto National Forest in the SRP watershed and power infrastructure corridor.

SRP’s Innovation and Development Program funds research projects with Arizona universities, research organizations and technology companies on a variety of topics important to SRP.

This research will help protect water supplies by improving understanding of wildfire risk in SRP’s watershed. After a wildfire, burned trees and damaged soil can reduce how well the land absorbs and stores water, increasing erosion and limiting the amount of water that flows into reservoirs.

It will also support power reliability, as many of SRP’s transmission and telecommunication towers run through forested areas. By improving early awareness of wildfire conditions, SRP can better plan and respond to protect critical infrastructure.

New nuclear generation will take time to develop, which is why it’s essential that Arizona’s leading energy providers begin these initial steps now. APS, SRP and TEP are utilizing industry guidance to evaluate locations throughout Arizona, including sites that have been used for coal-fired power generation. The study will use a phased screening methodology to narrow down areas in the state to a short list of leading candidates, culminating with the selection of a preferred site.   

As part of the site selection process, the energy providers will begin stakeholder engagement and community outreach, and plan to hold community meetings near potential nuclear generating sites in late 2026 to share information and seek feedback.  

The siting study, which is expected to be completed within the next six months, is foundational to subsequent steps in the nuclear planning process. Once the study is complete, the energy providers will evaluate technical, financial and other factors before determining if they will develop an Early Site Permit (ESP) application. If an ESP application is pursued, the companies would then decide whether to submit the application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for approval. 

APS, SRP and TEP recently received notice they were not awarded the U.S. Department of Energy grant they applied for in early 2025 to support this work. They will continue to work together to explore future funding opportunities to help mitigate the costs of evaluating potential new nuclear generation. 

The joint nuclear exploration effort comes as Arizona’s electricity needs continue to rise, driven by population growth and economic expansion. APS, SRP and TEP all set peak-demand records in 2025, underscoring the need for continued long-term planning and reliable generation. The energy providers are working proactively to ensure the grid can keep pace with rising demand, while also ensuring safe, reliable and sustainable electricity for customers. 

The companies have not made a final decision to build a new nuclear plant in Arizona, and no nuclear technology has been chosen for the potential project. Both small modular reactors and larger reactor designs remain under review. Any future project would depend on industry progress on cost and schedule predictability, supply chain development and financing considerations. In the long term, the companies will prioritize nuclear technologies that are commercially proven as reliable; have been safely and successfully deployed elsewhere; and are provided by suppliers with strong operational records and demonstrated commercial viability. 

New nuclear generation opportunities will be discussed at an Arizona Corporation Commission workshop hosted by Commission Chairman Nick Myers and Commissioner René Lopez on Thursday, June 25, 2026. The workshop will bring together energy providers, policymakers and industry stakeholders to further discuss the role nuclear energy can play in resource planning.

Utility workers across Arizona respond to emergencies, maintain infrastructure, and support communities during extreme weather and other critical situations. The enactment of SB 1448, the Utility Worker Protection Act, provides additional legal protections that recognize the essential nature of this work and are intended to deter acts of violence against those performing it. The new law, which designates attacks on on-duty utility workers as aggravated assault, will take effect in September.

WHAT: 

Registration for three SRP Free Shade Tree Program virtual workshops is now open. The program, which is offered in partnership with Trees Matter, gives SRP customers two free shade trees after they complete a free online class that teaches them how to maximize the benefits of their trees. 

When planted in strategic areas, shade trees can help reduce energy costs by up to 25%, improve air quality, increase property value and support local wildlife. All trees offered through the program are desert-adapted species, which include Native Mesquite, Thornless Mesquite, Palo Verde, Willow Acacia, Desert Willow and Lilac Chaste. Participants will learn more about the benefits of each species and how to care for them during the online workshop. 

Customers will be notified of the tree pickup date after completing the webinar. In fiscal year 2026, SRP distributed nearly 6,000 free trees to customers. Since the initiative began in 2012, 33,000 customers have planted trees through the SRP Shade Tree Program.

Pediment enters service as SRP prepares for sustained load growth driven by population increases and expanding commercial demand. The utility expects to more than double its system capacity over the next decade, with battery storage playing an increasingly central role in meeting peak demand and maintaining system reliability. 

“The addition of new battery energy storage resources provides SRP with flexibility and capacity that helps us reliably serve our customers,” said Bobby Olsen, SRP Associate General Manager and Chief Power System Executive. “This project is an important addition to SRP’s energy portfolio and supports SRP’s commitment to providing reliable, affordable and sustainable power as the Valley continues to experience record growth.” 

The Pediment project, which Aypa Power acquired from Eolian in 2024, is the first of two projects under contract with SRP and is a key addition to the utility’s growing energy storage portfolio.  In addition to Pediment, Aypa Power is developing another 250 MW / 2,000 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system under contract with SRP, which is expected to come online in December 2028. 

Together, Aypa Power’s projects represent 500 MW and 3,000 MWh of energy storage capacity on SRP's system, supporting the utility’s ongoing investment in flexible, dispatchable resources to reliably serve its customers.

The project created over 200 construction jobs and is expected to deliver over $16 million in direct economic impact, including $14 million in property tax revenue to Maricopa County during its first 20 years of operation.

To maintain reliability and affordability for customers, SRP has a diverse energy mix that includes nuclear, hydroelectric, natural gas, coal, battery storage and renewable resources like solar, wind, biomass and geothermal. SRP has more than 3,000 MW of carbon-free resources available to serve customers, which include over 1,560 MW of solar and more than 1,570 MW of battery storage supporting its grid.

The project is also part of Google and SRP’s innovative collaboration  to accelerate deployment of non-lithium-ion long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies that support reliability, affordability and sustainability. It will store enough energy to power approximately 4,275 homes for 10 hours. The project was selected through a Request for Proposals for LDES pilots issued by SRP in 2024. Google will fund a portion of the project through a cost-sharing agreement with SRP.

The system will utilize Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery and proprietary thermomechanical long-duration energy storage process. The technology works by using power from the grid to compress and store CO2, then, when power is needed, expanding the CO2 through a turbine to generate energy to send back to the grid. This project has accelerated Energy Dome’s investment in U.S. supply chain development that supports its broader mission to bring affordable, reliable energy to benefit U.S. energy customers and create American jobs.

SRP is working to at least double the number of generating resources on its power system by 2035 to meet increasing energy demand in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Energy storage is an important part of that effort.

The energy storage project is expected to come online in 2029. SRP and Energy Dome will work with Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), an independent, non-profit energy R&D institute, to monitor performance data from the project.

SRP and Reclamation perform these inspections and maintenance projects every 20 years to ensure dam safety and water reliability for 2.5 million Valley residents. Throughout the project no water will be wasted. Water drawn from Canyon Lake will be used to satisfy normal deliveries to SRP water customers. In addition, water will continue to be stored in other reservoirs with no interruption in water delivery.

While maintenance is regularly performed on the dams, some critical equipment is located underwater, which makes it inaccessible without lowering the lake level. The work will focus on the normally submerged portions of Mormon Flat and Horse Mesa dams, as well as the river channel downstream of Horse Mesa Dam.

The drawdown project has several important benefits, including:

• Supporting operational safety of the dams for water storage and flood control.
• Ensuring water reliability for more than 2.5 million Valley residents.
• Providing an opportunity for SRP and other agencies and businesses to perform any necessary maintenance work and repairs to their Canyon Lake facilities.

It will take approximately four weeks to lower the water level; approximately eight weeks to complete the inspection and maintenance work; and approximately four weeks to fill the lake back to the normal level using water from upstream reservoirs.

Canyon Lake has over 57,000 acre-feet of water storage capacity – enough to provide water for about 173,000 Arizona families for a year. SRP began building dams, creating reservoirs and managing the surface water infrastructure more than 120 years ago. SRP is committed to maintaining adequate water supplies for long-term future use.

The MOU aims to improve long-term water management in the Colorado River Basin by advancing discussions to develop a framework that could allow for interstate water exchanges. The goal is to discuss a pathway that would allow agencies to partner across state borders on desalination, recycled water and other water supply projects that would benefit multiple states.

The MOU was signed by the Bureau of Reclamation, San Diego County Water Authority, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Southern Nevada Water Authority, the Arizona Department of Water Resources, Central Arizona Project and Salt River Project.

Interstate exchanges can be an important next step in successfully managing limited Colorado River supplies in the future by allowing shared financing of new supply projects that, through operational flexibility, could provide water to participating agencies when they need it most – taking advantage of variations in local hydrology across the Basin and other factors. Future water exchanges would use existing infrastructure and avoid costly new infrastructure without changing or reallocating existing rights or obligating parties to projects.  

Long-term drought has reduced Colorado River system water storage to about 36% of capacity, and the combination of the lowest snowpack on record and record-breaking heat has further intensified drought conditions. These compounding factors create elevated risks to essential water and power infrastructure that supply water to more than 43 million people, underscoring the need for near-term actions to balance supply and demand.

The San Diego County Water Authority sustains a $267 billion regional economy and the quality of life for 3.3 million residents through a multi-decade water supply diversification plan, major infrastructure investments and forward-thinking policies that promote fiscal and environmental responsibility. CAP is a 336-mile system of aqueducts, tunnels, pumping plants and pipelines that supplies Colorado River water to the region where 80% of Arizona’s population resides, and delivers more tribal water than any other organization in the United States. CAP carries water from Lake Havasu to the southern boundary of the San Xavier Indian Reservation southwest of Tucson, supplying water to approximately 50 subcontractors in Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties.

The initiative aims to increase swim proficiency and reduce drowning risks, particularly in communities with limited access to formal swim education. Classes will be offered at ten aquatic centers in Tempe, Phoenix, Mesa and other cities.

“At SRP, keeping our community safe around water is a priority. While drowning rates declined last year, even one incident is too many, and we must continue that progress,” said Rori Minor, community engagement strategist at SRP. “By partnering with local aquatic centers and water safety organizations, we help families stay safe in and around water.”

Swimming classes are now being offered in participating aquatic centers. Lessons will be available for children as young as six months old and will focus on fundamental swimming skills. Adults will also benefit from this grant through access to water‑safety instruction and swim lessons designed to build confidence and strengthen essential skills in and near water.

“We’re excited and grateful to partner with SRP to promote drowning prevention and water safety education,” said Yvonne Taylor, Aquatics Supervisor at Mesa Aquatics Center. “Thanks to this grant, more than 1,000 children and adults in Mesa will learn to swim this year.”

“As the Valley experiences longer periods of extreme heat, SRP recognizes the importance of supporting organizations that help address the increasing needs of our community, especially those of our most vulnerable residents,” said Anne Rickard, Director of Community Partnerships at SRP. “By partnering with agencies that manage both outdoor heat exposure and unsafe indoor conditions, we can help reduce heat-related risks.” 

The funding will be augmented by SRP employee volunteer efforts. Earlier this year, to prepare for the summer months, employees built 3,250 heat relief kits, three times as many as in 2025, and distributed them to four local agencies, which included the Arizona Faith Network, Circle the City, Phoenix Rescue Mission, and St. Vincent de Paul.  

“Extreme heat is one of the most serious risks facing older adults and low-income families in Arizona,” said Tami Bohannon, President and CEO at AllThrive365. “With summers growing longer and more intense, SRP’s investment in AC repair and replacement serves the community as both a cost-saving utility upgrade and a critical health intervention. This support helps our neighbors stay safe, remain independent, and age longer and healthier in their own homes.”  

Recipients of SRP’s 2026 heat relief support include All Thrive 365 (Formerly Foundation for Senior Living), Arizona Faith Network, Arizona Sustainability Alliance, Casa Grande CG Helps, Circle the City, Justa Center, Keys to Change, Phoenix ToolBank, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, Stardust, The Nature Conservancy, Valley of the Sun United Way and Wildfire. 

SRP also provides $5 million to the SRP Bill Assistance Program administered by Wildfire. These funds are allocated to various nonprofit community organizations that assist eligible SRP customers in need with utility bill assistance. • Downed power lines are extremely dangerous. A single high-voltage power line can carry electric currents that can be fatal.
• People should stay at least 100 feet away from downed lines and wires (the length of two semi-trucks) and should never touch lines or drive over them if they are in the road. If you see a downed power line, stay away and call 911.
• SRP crews are often the first responders to arrive at the site of a downed power line.
• SRP crews will de-energize lines as safely and as quickly as possible to ensure the safety of other first responders and emergency personnel.

Scammers may pose as utility representatives through phone calls, emails, text messages or in-person visits, demanding immediate payment and threatening service disconnection.  

SRP will never require immediate payment over the phone or in person. If a customer is at risk of service disconnection, SRP will always send one or more notices by mail and, if a customer is enrolled in SRP eNotes, by email or text. SRP will call customers if they are at risk of disconnection but will not pressure customers into paying over the phone or request a particular payment method.  

“We encourage customers to pause and verify their SRP account information before making any payment. If the caller is creating a sense of urgency to pay, hang up the phone and call SRP directly,” said Amy Gentry, Director of Customer Contact Operations at SRP. “Our customer service team is available 24 hours a day to answer questions and you can verify your account information online.”

• Storm Preparedness and Safety Tips: SRP experts are available to share essential safety tips ahead of monsoon season. • Free Swimming Lessons Available for Children and Adults: SRP is partnering with local aquatic centers across the Valley to offer free swimming lessons for children and adults, helping expand access to water safety resources in the community. To electrify the 13 homes, SRP crews worked a combined 3,753 hours over two weeks, installing 108 primary poles, 25 secondary poles and 10 transformers, and stringing 91,866 feet of wire.

This year, Light Up Navajo VII brought together 53 utility companies from 24 states. SRP contributed a team of 19 employees to support the effort. With support from participating utilities, the goal is to extend electricity to at least 300 homes by the end of August.

“This year, we worked in very different terrain with sand almost everywhere,” said Thomas Gerbig, SRP Lineman. “Even with four‑wheel‑drive vehicles, we often got stuck so we relied on an NTUA tractor with tracks for part of our work. Digging a single pole hole could take nearly an hour, compared to about 15 minutes in the city. I would come back every year to work on this project. The physical and weather challenges we face don’t compare to seeing the smile of someone turning on a light in their home for the first time.”

Light Up Navajo is a humanitarian initiative launched in 2019 to bring electricity to homes across the Navajo Nation that still lack access to power. The program stems from a partnership created by the American Public Power Association (APPA) and the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA).

“Ten years ago, I had a dream of moving back to the reservation and building a place for my kids in the place where I grew up and the hills I played on,” said Elysia Yazzie, NTUA customer. “Electricity will make our lives easier, and our dreams come true.”

According to APPA, there are 400,000 Navajo citizens and approximately 185,000 live across the 27,000‑square‑mile Navajo Nation, which spans across northern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico and southeastern Utah. Of the roughly 55,000 homes in the region, an estimated 9,377 still do not have electricity — representing nearly 70% of U.S. households without power. 

“We are incredibly grateful to SRP crews for their dedication and hard work,” said Deenise Becenti, Government and Public Affairs Manager at NTUA. “We know that bringing power to this area can be extremely challenging due to long distances between homes, rugged terrain and changing weather conditions.”

To date, SRP has installed 1,095 wood poles, strung 603,227 feet of wire, set 118 transformers, and provided reliable power to 159 families for the first time.

SRP crews are scheduled to return to the Navajo Nation in the fall to continue connecting more homes to the electric grid.

• In 2025, SRP experienced at least one preventable outage per month caused by balloons.
• To safely dispose of mylar balloons, residents should do the following:
  • Use regular string or ribbon to tie balloons. Avoid using Mylar string.
  • Never release balloons into the air: a single balloon can cause outages that impact thousands of Valley residents.
  • Secure balloons directly to weights to ensure they don’t float away.
  • Deflate and puncture balloons before discarding them in trash cans.

Launched by the State of Arizona in March 2026, the Power AZ program offers help paying utility bills to Arizonans who may not qualify for traditional low-income energy assistance.

Households with an income of up to 100% of the State Median Income, which is $8,998 per month for a household of four, could receive between $160 to $640 in assistance in a 12-month period. A one-time crisis payment of up to $500 is also available to those who qualify. This income threshold is higher than the limits set by the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), meaning many customers who do not typically qualify for LIHEAP may be eligible under this program. It is estimated that approximately 30,000 additional households across Arizona could benefit from the program.

The $15 million in Power AZ funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and customers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Customers can apply for Power AZ assistance through the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) A to Z portal. Applications are automatically reviewed for eligibility under both LIHEAP and Power AZ based on household income. The amount of assistance provided depends on factors such as income, urgency of need and energy usage.

Customers facing financial challenges beyond utility bill assistance can reach out to SRP’s Resource Counselors, a specialized team that will connect customers with community resources for housing, food, heat relief and other assistance. Resource Counselors are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The solar development agreement will support SRP’s plan to more than double the capacity of its power system by 2035 while maintaining reliability and affordability and making continued progress toward its sustainability goals. SRP’s plan includes the addition of thousands of megawatts of renewable energy, including solar, as well as natural gas and battery energy storage resources.

The agreement calls for the construction of 500 MW of solar per year from 2029 through 2034. The projects developed under this agreement will deliver low-cost energy for SRP customers and create long-term community benefits across Arizona.  

“We look forward to working with NextEra Energy Resources to add the magnitude of new solar energy we need at the pace required to meet the increasing energy demand of our customers,” said Bobby Olsen, SRP Associate General Manager and Chief Power System Executive. “This approach will allow us to collaborate early in the project development process to minimize project risk and ensure the best outcomes for our customers and the communities where we operate.”

NextEra Energy Resources has already developed more than 1,000 MW of resources across five projects currently serving SRP customers including Sonoran Solar Energy Center, Storey Energy Center, Saint Solar Energy Center, Pinal Central Energy Center and Babbitt Ranch Energy Center.

“As America’s largest energy infrastructure builder, we are uniquely positioned to meet SRP’s needs,” said Brian Bolster, NextEra Energy Resources President and CEO. “We are excited to continue building on our long-standing relationship with SRP and to continue to invest in Arizona to help power the state’s growth with low-cost solar power.”

NextEra Energy Resources was selected through an SRP Request for Proposals issued in 2024.

The solar development agreement will complement SRP’s existing procurement and self-build processes. It does not replace SRP’s All-Source Request for Proposals process.

SRP has more than 3,000 MW of carbon-free resources currently serving its customers, including more than 1,500 MW of solar and more than 1,570 MW of battery storage supporting its grid. SRP also has more solar energy and storage capacity under development.

El evento contará con actividades al aire libre, incluyendo presentaciones de animales, ballet folklórico, mariachi y piñatas. Además, habrán pinta caritas, encuentros con luchadores de lucha libre y vueltas gratis en el carrusel durante todo el evento.
