SRP to Host Community-wide Open House Event in St. Johns

SRP will host an in-person and virtual open house event in St. Johns for the public to learn more about its plans to convert Coronado Generating Station (CGS) from coal to natural gas. The public can learn about SRP’s Coal Community Transition (CCT) team’s ongoing efforts to support economic development in the region as part of this transition. SRP plans to cease coal generation at the site and complete the conversion to natural gas by late 2029.

DETAILS:
In June 2025, the SRP Board of Directors approved a proposal to convert CGS from coal to natural gas. To support this conversion, a new lateral natural gas pipeline will be permitted and constructed by a third-party gas supplier.  

Converting CGS to run on natural gas is the lowest-cost option to preserve the plant’s capacity, which is enough power to serve more than 150,000 Valley homes. This capacity is critical to helping SRP meet the increasing energy demand of SRP customers, which is expected to increase by 50% in the next 10 years. 

The transition also supports SRP’s ambitious carbon reduction goals and provides a bridge to the mid-2040s, when other generation technology that could be used on the CGS site have matured, like advanced nuclear.
