SRP to Host Additional Community-wide Open House in Apache County
SRP will host additional in-person and virtual open house events in St. Johns for the public to learn more about SRP’s plan to convert Coronado Generating Station (CGS) from coal to natural gas. SRP plans to cease coal generation at the site and complete the conversion to natural gas by late 2029.

DETAILS:
In June 2025, the SRP Board of Directors approved a proposal to convert CGS from coal to natural gas. Converting CGS to run on natural gas is the lowest-cost option to preserve the plant’s capacity, which is enough power to serve more than 150,000 Valley homes. The transition also supports SRP’s ambitious carbon reduction goals and provides a bridge to the mid-2040s, when other generation technology that could be used on the CGS site have matured, like advanced nuclear. To support this conversion, a new lateral natural gas pipeline will be permitted and constructed by a third-party gas supplier.
SRP is a community-based, not-for-profit public power utility and the largest electricity provider in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, serving about 1.2 million customers. SRP provides water to about 2.5 million Valley residents, delivering 260 billion gallons of water (800,000 acre-feet) each year, and manages a 13,000-square-mile watershed that includes an extensive system of reservoirs, wells, irrigation laterals, and 131 miles of canals.
