SRP Seeks Additional Public Feedback on South Mountain Transmission Project

Salt River Project (SRP) is planning the South Mountain Transmission (SMT) Project to support future growth along the South Mountain Freeway in Laveen, Arizona.  

The City of Phoenix is planning for future development in Laveen, which could include a mix of land uses such as an industrial and tech park, retail offerings, hospitals, hotels and resorts, residential areas and other new businesses that could bring high-paying jobs to the community.  To meet anticipated energy needs for the proposed development, SRP plans to build a new 500/230/69 kV substation, together with 2-3 miles of new overhead double-circuit 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines and less than one mile of new overhead 500-kV overhead transmission lines. To meet anticipated future growth and energy demand, SRP plans to build the two separate double-circuit 230kV lines and 500kV lines as part of the SMT Project.  

 SRP has incorporated public input and feedback received during the first phase of open houses and stakeholder meetings to modify the transmission line route options presented to the public during that initial phase of public outreach. Moving into the second phase of public outreach, SRP is now seeking public input on modified route options.  

 SRP will host the next series of open houses in September. Two virtual and one in-person open houses will be conducted for the public to learn more about this project’s progress and provide comments on the new proposed routes.   SRP is preparing an application for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility (CEC) for the 230-kV lines. As part of that process, SRP will present evidence in support of its application to the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee before seeking final approval from the Arizona Corporation Commission.
