Bo Svoma weather balloon launch
SRP Meteorologist Bo Svoma prepares to launch a weather balloon from the roof of SRP’s headquarters in Tempe, Ariz. SRP, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Weather Service (NWS) Phoenix meteorologists coordinate to launch weather balloons twice per day during the monsoon. The balloons launch from the roof of SRP’s headquarters in Tempe, where the NOAA/NWS Phoenix office is also located. The entire weather community — local to national — utilize the data to improve forecasts.

SRP Offers Monsoon and Summer Story Ideas for 2025

- Power Line Safety Demonstration: As monsoon season approaches, learn from SRP experts what to do if you see a downed power line and or if a downed power line falls on your car. SRP will also offer best-practices around heat safety and demonstrate how to detect and respond to heat-related illnesses. - Weather Balloon: SRP meteorologists, along with the National Weather Service, launch balloons from the roof of SRP Headquarters in Tempe during the monsoon season. The data from the launches helps SRP predict storm activity and maximum temperatures, provide guidance for scheduling power crews and maintain reliability and safety for customers and employees. - SRP Glove Lab: Inside a high voltage testing lab, a specialized safety team inspects the gear that stands between SRP linemen and field workers and electricity. Using advanced equipment, technicians test rubber gloves and mats in machines that generate up to 40,000 volts of energy. Each item is evaluated to ensure it can withstand the electrical demands of the job and keep employees safe. - Monsoon Home Preparedness: SRP experts offer monsoon and summer readiness tips for customers ahead of increased temperatures and high winds. Learn what to include in an outage safety kit to stay safe if the power goes out, how to make your home more energy efficient, and how to help prevent outages by securing outdoor items such as umbrellas, trampolines and patio furniture. Interviews may be conducted in-studio or at a home to highlight expert recommendations.
