SRP Offers Free and Low-Cost Tips to Prepare Homes for Summer

While summer is still a few months away, temperatures across Arizona are already beginning to rise, making now the ideal time for residents to make their homes as energy efficient as possible before the peak heat arrives.  

SRP offers the following free and low-cost, practical strategies to help customers stay comfortable while managing energy use during the hottest months of the year.  

• Schedule a Home Energy Assessment (HEA) – A professional assessment can identify areas where energy is being lost and recommend improvements tailored to the home. The program has helped participants save 48.1 million kWh and $6.25 million since inception. The online assessment is free to all SRP customers. The in-person assessment costs $45, and is free for income-qualified customers. • Check and Replace Air Filters – Replacing or cleaning air filters monthly can improve airflow and help cooling systems operate more efficiently. Dirty filters force air conditioning units to work harder, increasing energy use and potentially shortening equipment lifespan.   
   
• Seal Cracks and Gaps – Sealing cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and ductwork is essential for preventing conditioned air from escaping. Even small openings can increase cooling demand during extreme heat. The free kit customers receive after a Home Energy Assessment includes weatherstripping to support these improvements. Discounted weatherization kits are also available at the SRP Marketplace.  
   
• Enroll in the Bring Your Own Thermostat (BYOT) Program – Customers with a smart thermostat can take part in the BYOT program, which provides bill savings when SRP makes small, temporary temperature adjustments during periods of high energy demand. Customers can get a $50 bill credit per qualifying thermostat enrolled and an additional $25 credit each year they remain in the program. • Install Shade Screens or Use Window Coverings – Blocking direct sunlight, especially on west-and south-facing windows, can reduce indoor heat gain, which contributes up to 50% of the heat entering the home. SRP customers can receive a rebate of $1 per square foot on professionally installed shade screens or window film. Customers who have installed their shade screen can complete an online application at srp.net/shade to receive a rebate.   
   
• Review Rate Plan Options – Being on the right price plan can help manage overall energy costs. SRP offers time-of-day price plans with super off-peak pricing, flat rate pricing, and prepaid electricity options. Customers can contact customer service at 602.236.8888 or visit srp.net/priceplans to determine which plan is right for them.   
   
• Switch to LED Lights – Lighting accounts for roughly 10% of a home’s overall energy usage, costing the average SRP residential customer $135 per year in electricity. Customers who switch from incandescent to LED lights can save an average of $75 per year. Customers who perform a Home Energy Assessment (HEA) will receive a kit with 25 LED bulbs. Instant rebates are also available at the SRP Marketplace.
