SRP Offers Five Tips to Prepare Your Home for Summer

As temperatures rise, now is the perfect time to get your home ready for the summer months. Taking a few proactive steps can help you stay cool, protect your home and help keep utility bills stable during the summer.    

These five expert-backed tips will help keep you comfortable and prepared for the months ahead.  

  • Bump Up the Thermostat – Air conditioning can make up half of your summer energy bill. To help keep bills stable, set your thermostat to 78-80 degrees when home and up to 85 degrees when away. Each degree above 80 saves up to 2-3% on cooling costs. Using a smart thermostat can make your AC more efficient. SRP customers can get a rebate on smart thermostats from the SRP Marketplace™ and a $75 bill credit per device through the SRP Bring Your Own Thermostat Program™ (BYOT).   
     
  • Check and Replace Air Filters – Dirty air filters make your AC unit work harder. Set a reminder to change your filters every 30 Days to improve efficiency and extend the unit's life.
     
  • Seal Windows and Doors – Heat can enter your home through tiny gaps around doors and windows when the weather stripping is worn or damaged, leading to higher energy bills and uneven room temperatures. Spend some time this spring inspecting the weather stripping around exterior doors and windows to ensure cracks are sealed and air isn't leaking into your home. Caulk around window frames and all exterior wall penetrations, such as pipes, electrical boxes, and vents.
     
  • Schedule a Home Energy Assessment – An SRP expert will help analyze your home's energy use. You will receive a detailed report based on their findings and a free Energy Savings Kit that includes a smart thermostat, LED lights and more.   • Shade Screens – About 50% of the heat entering your home comes through windows. Shade them with protective screens to cut cooling costs by up to 25%.
