SRP Offers 2024 Monsoon and Summer Story Ideas

Below is a list of monsoon and summer story ideas for 2024. To coordinate any of the following stories, contact SRP Media Relations at media@srpnet.com

  • Electrical safety demonstration: Learn what to do if a power line falls on your vehicle and (if necessary) how to safely exit the vehicle. See up close, the devastating effects of electricity on the human body with our BRATS wagon (Burn Risk Awareness Training System) demonstration. Demonstrations will be provided between 6 and 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5 at the Tempe Service Center, 110 W Elliot Rd, Tempe, AZ 85283.

  • Weather balloon: During the monsoon season, SRP meteorologists and the National Weather Service launch balloons from the roof of SRP’s headquarters in Tempe. Because weather can play a significant role in creating power outages, SRP relies heavily on its staff of meteorologists to predict storm activity. Launch demonstrations can be arranged Tuesdays through Thursdays for the 4 p.m. launches.

  • SRP opens new control center: Get a behind-the-scenes look at SRP’s new Transmission and Generation Operations Control Center that will play a critical role in power reliability.  Tours of the facility can be arranged.

  • SRP offers backyard monsoon safety tips: Common backyard items such as pool toys, furniture and umbrellas can pose a major safety risk during monsoon storms and can lead to power outages when blown into power lines. An expert from SRP can do a walk-through of a backyard and highlight steps everyone at home can take to reduce safety risks and prevent outages. Live shots and interviews can be arranged.

  • Free shade screen workshops: Salt River Project (SRP) and Kabat’s Ace Hardware have partnered to host free  do-it-yourself shade screen workshops for SRP customers at the Mesa Home Improvement Expo (June 28-30). Shade screens can help lower electricity costs by up to 25% when added to windows that receive direct sunlight. All necessary materials will be provided at no cost to build one shade screen. In-studio interviews are available to highlight the benefits of shade screens for energy efficiency and extend an invitation to the expo.

  •  Energy Efficiency while on vacation: It can be tempting to turn off the air conditioning (AC) to save energy when going on vacation. However, it is important to protect homes from extreme heat while away. SRP experts can offer various tips to help customers save money and keep their homes safe. Interviews can be conducted in-studio or involve a tour through a home to visually show the expert's recommendations.
