SRP Issues 2024 All-source RFP for New Power Generation Resources
SRP will seek at least 1,200 MW of peak electrical generating capacity, 2,500 MW of carbon-free capacity between 2028 and 2029.
As a key finding from its Integrated System Plan, SRP recently announced it will need to double or triple power resource capacity from a wide range of technologies to meet projected energy demand and achieve its 2035 sustainability goals.
In support of adding adequate power supply in this timeframe, SRP today issued a 2024 All-Source Request for Proposals (RFP). SRP specifically seeks projects that can provide at least 700 megawatts (MW) of power capacity during the highest peak energy demand periods in summer, to be online by December 1, 2028. The utility also seeks an additional 500 MW or more of peak electrical generating capacity by December 1, 2029. Additionally, SRP seeks to add up to 2,500 MW of new carbon-free resources by December 1, 2029.
Every watt of energy SRP delivers in the years ahead will have less carbon. Today, more than 2,300 MW of carbon-free energy – including nearly 1,000 MW of solar energy – is serving SRP customers. Additionally, more than 600 MW of batteries and pumped hydro storage help SRP provide power during times of highest peak demand. SRP expects to add another 500 MW of solar, 161 MW of wind, and over 600 MW of additional battery storage by the end of this year. These additions include a wind farm under construction north of Flagstaff and a solar and battery project that will support Meta and other SRP customers with clean energy.
SRP will evaluate and compare proposals that meet the minimum requirements identified in the RFP, including SRP self-developed resource options. SRP currently serves customer energy needs with a diverse fuel mix including nuclear, hydroelectric, natural gas, coal, battery storage and renewable resources including solar, wind and geothermal.
Resource projects selected through this All-Source RFP process will support SRP’s 2035 Sustainability Goals and outlined resource growth plans in SRP’s Integrated System Plan. This RFP will be open until May 3, 2024, and is available through the Wood Mackenzie Supply Chain Sourcing Intelligence® platform.
