SRP and Plus Power to Host Ribbon Cutting for Two New Battery Storage Facilities, Including Largest Standalone Battery in Arizona

WHAT:
Salt River Project (SRP) and Plus Power are hosting a ribbon-cutting event to commemorate the opening of two new battery storage facilities, Sierra Estrella Energy Storage and Superstition Energy Storage.  These projects add 340 megawatts (MW) of additional battery storage to SRP’s system—enough to power 76,000 Valley homes for a four-hour period, just in time for summer. The batteries, which include SRP’s largest grid-tied battery and Arizona’s largest standalone battery will absorb excess energy on SRP’s grid and store it for times of peak demand while facilitating the continued integration of renewable resources into SRP’s power system.

DETAILS:

• The 250 MW Sierra Estrella Energy Storage facility is SRP’s largest grid-tied battery and will store enough energy to power more than 56,000 homes for a four-hour period.  
• The 90 MW Superstition Energy Storage facility, located in Gilbert, can store enough energy to serve more than 20,000 Valley homes for a four-hour period.  
• Plus Power designed and built the facilities in consultation with Avondale and Gilbert first responders and will operate the batteries to updated national codes and standards for Battery Energy Storage Systems with training provided to first responders.  
• Both facilities utilized state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery energy storage systems designed and manufactured in the U.S. by Tesla.
