Open Houses Scheduled for Planned Pumped Storage Project
SRP has scheduled two open houses regarding the utility’s proposed pumped storage hydropower project near Apache Lake on the Salt River. The proposed project would expand the current hydroelectric generation capacity of SRP’s Salt River reservoir system to help meet customer demand during on-peak hours when renewable resources are ramping down.
The facility would have a capacity between 1,000 and 2,000 megawatts – enough power to serve approximately 225,000 to 450,000 homes. The open houses are designed to give local residents an opportunity to learn about the project and offer their input. There will be one in-person open house and one virtual open house.

The project is in the early stages of development and will go through federal and state review processes as needed. There will also be open houses scheduled to receive public input during those processes. The goal is to have the facility online by 2033.
SRP is a community-based, not-for-profit public power utility and the largest electricity provider in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, serving about 1.2 million customers. SRP provides water to about 2.5 million Valley residents, delivering 260 billion gallons of water (800,000 acre-feet) each year, and manages a 13,000-square-mile watershed that includes an extensive system of reservoirs, wells, irrigation laterals, and 131 miles of canals.
