Commercial and Municipal Customers Sign up for Solar Energy from SRP

As part of its ongoing commitment to provide more options for commercial and municipal customers to achieve their sustainability goals and provide clean, renewable energy, Salt River Project announced that several large customers have signed agreements to get a portion of their energy from the sun.

Participating customers include entities such as Albertsons Companies, Inc., City of Chandler, City of Mesa, City of Phoenix, CMC Steel Arizona, CyrusOne, Digital Realty Trust, Freeport-McMoRan, Mesa Public Schools and Walmart.

Through the Sustainable Energy Offering program, SRP has been working with several of its larger customers across various business segments including mining, manufacturing, retail, grocery, municipalities and education to deliver renewable energy.

Each customer will replace a portion of their current energy usage with new solar energy. SRP has announced the newest source for solar energy will be from a 100-megawatt (MW), solar plant to be built in Coolidge, Ariz. by a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC.

The Sustainable Energy Offering program contributes to SRP’s 2035 goals, which include a commitment to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions from power generation by 33 percent. Additionally, the plant will contribute to the SRP goal of adding 1,000 MW of new utility-scale solar energy to its system between now and the end of 2025.

“When we first announced the program, the reaction from our customers was overwhelmingly positive,” said SRP General Manager and CEO Mike Hummel. “This is a diverse group of customers from across different industries, so we can clearly see that sustainable energy is important to a broad group of customers. We are excited that we can offer a program that can meets those different needs with a utility-scale, solar energy at a competitive price.”
